Scope: Layout design – Complex multilingual text

Category: Academic textbook; includes front matter; text in both English and Arabic; end matter and Cover design.

Notes: Layout called for facing Arabic / English text, using an English font provided by the college for this project, As this is text depend on the translation some of the pages will end up with space at the bottom and other pages may seem quite full. Instead of page heading on the top of the page a rarely used side edges were utilized and kept the page numbers in the header where they would be expected. Page numbers were included in both Arabic numerals and Hindi as is used in original Arabic text.

Given that the text also used tables with ruled lines, those were avoided in the design and opted for dotted lines to separate the headers from the main text. Geometric patterns were used in the design as well to allude to complex and orderly subject matter of the text.

Use of the Amiri font for the Arabic text in this book, a metal type interpretation of the classic Arabic Naskh script. Amiri font is a modern version that is highly readable alphabet that will not confuse beginner readers of Arabic. It will also prepare the reader to read most standard Arabic publications that are produced today.  Another reason for this choice is that it closely matched the Arabic font of the original text.  The size follows British standard sizes for books to match the colleges other published books.
